Those Irons Had A Life Of Their Own...
by Johnny Miller

Sam Snead once told me about a driver someone gave to him in the late 1930s that was absolutely ideal for him. Its look, weight, feel and playability were so perfect that it transformed him overnight into one of the best drivers the game has seen. He used that driver for more than 20 years. A similar thing happened to me. In January 1974, I acquired an old set of Tommy Armour 915T irons that were pretty good but needed work. I sawed down their long hosels and placed big gobs of lead directly behind the sweet spots. Then I reground the top lines and soles until they were just right. Finally I added True Temper Dynamic S shafts, half an inch longer than standard in each club.

The result was pure magic. My distance control was phenomenal. I began knocking the flags down and all but dominated the PGA Tour that season, winning eight tournaments.

I played a lot of rounds that year with Chi Chi Rodriguez, who is a very superstitious man. Chi Chi thought those clubs were magic, like some kind of spell had been cast on them. He begged me to give him the clubs, but of course I refused. Years later, I had to back out of an outing because of some problems with my gallbladder. I phoned Chi Chi and asked him to fill in for me, and he agreed to do it--at no cost. I wanted to repay him for that gesture, so I gave him those magic Tommy Armour irons. But they didn't perform for him the way they had for me, and to this day, he doesn't believe the set is authentic. I have no choice but to play along. So Chi Chi, wherever you are, can I have my irons back?
